4) Tips and Locations for having a DIY Elopement Wedding in NZ

Let's dive in!

1) What is an elopement in New Zealand?

An elopement is a type of wedding characterised by its intimate and secretive nature. Traditionally, elopements involved a couple running away together to get married without the knowledge or approval of their families. However, the modern understanding of elopement has evolved, especially after the global pandemic and the forced introduction of reducing the size of your wedding guest list.

Today, an elopement generally refers to a small, private, and often spontaneous wedding ceremony. It typically involves only the couple themselves or a very limited number of close family and friends. The part I love most about elopement weddings in NZ is that the laser focus is on the couple's commitment to each other, rather than conforming to traditional wedding customs or societal expectations. The emphasis is on creating a meaningful and intimate ceremony that celebrates the love and connection between you as a couple.

Elopements can be simple and low-key or more elaborate, depending on your preferences. Some couples choose to have a small ceremony officiated by a wedding celebrant, while others opt for a spontaneous exchange of vows in a scenic location.

2) Having an elopement in NZ.

Having an elopement in NZ offers a truly magical and unforgettable experience. New Zealand is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, making it a popular destination for couples seeking an intimate and picturesque wedding elopement.

Elopements in NZ will provide you with the opportunity to escape the crowds and have an intimate celebration. New Zealand boasts diverse and breathtaking locations that serve as the perfect backdrop for your elopement. From majestic mountains and serene lakes to pristine beaches and lush forests, you can choose a setting that aligns with your vision. You could have a Queenstown elopement Wanaka, Milford Sound, the Abel Tasman National Park, or the Coromandel Peninsula elopement. These locations offer stunning scenery and a romantic ambiance for your elopement.

3) The legalities of having an elopement in NZ.

A question I get very often is whether it is legal to have an elopement in NZ. Yes, it is most definitely legal to have an elopement in NZ. However, there are some legalities that you will need to consider.

  1. You must obtain a marriage license. You can apply for a marriage license online or in person at any registry office in New Zealand. The cost of a marriage license is NZ$150.

  2. You must have a Celebrant to marry you. A celebrant is a person who is legally authorised to perform marriages in New Zealand. Get in touch with a wedding celebrant as possible. It would be my pleasure to guide you through the process of getting married in New Zealand.

  3. You must have two witnesses. Your witnesses need to be over the age of 18 and be present at your wedding ceremony.

  4. Your marriage must be registered. Within 10 working days of your wedding ceremony, you must register your marriage with the Registrar Of Marriages. You can do this online or in person at any registry office in New Zealand. Your wedding celebrant will be more than happy to guide you through the process of eloping in New Zealand.

4) Tips and Locations for having a DIY Elopement Wedding

Choosing New Zealand to have your elopement wedding means that you are spoilt for choice. If the above elopement packages in NZ do not suit your budget, why not plan a customised DIY elopement wedding in New Zealand.

Embrace the freedom to create an intimate and personalised wedding experience, that reflects your unique love story amidst the natural wonders of this enchanting country.

With a DIY elopement wedding in NZ, you have the ability to unleash your creativity and immerse yourselves in the natural wonders this country has to offer. My favourite elopement wedding locations are in fact found in the sanctity of national public parks in New Zealand.

An important point to note is that anything outside of just a wedding ceremony in a regional park requires you to apply for a permit. Register with Auckland Council to and apply online for your elopement permit.

Here is my list of 5 favourite national park elopement locations in New Zealand.

  1. Abel Tasman National Park allows you to exchange vows amidst lush native forests and turquoise waters.

  2. Tongariro National Park, has breathtaking volcanic landscapes and dramatic mountain peaks. This sets the stage for a truly extraordinary wedding celebration, surrounded by the wonders of nature.

  3. Nestled in the heart of New Zealand's South Island is Fiordland National Park. It offers an enchanting setting for a truly magical wedding, where towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and serene fiords combine to create a breathtaking backdrop for your special day.

  4. Kahurangi National Park, a hidden gem on New Zealand's South Island, provides an idyllic backdrop for a truly intimate and nature-inspired wedding ceremony, where rugged mountains, ancient forests, and pristine rivers converge in perfect harmony.

  5. Cornwall Park in Auckland, New Zealand, offers a picturesque and romantic setting for a dream wedding. Its sprawling green fields, iconic oak trees, and stunning views of the city skyline provide a charming backdrop to your special day.
